New Partnership Set to Bring Social Impact Measurement into the Digital Era

Digital start-up Navigating Outcomes to join world-class evaluation company Clear Horizon in joint bid to transform Australian social impact landscape.

There were many unknowns when Australian evaluator Jen Riley first set out to create her own social impact consultancy, Navigating Outcomes. Who her key audience and clients would be, how she could secure the diverse skill sets needed to run her own business, and how she might translate the sometimes overwhelming world of monitoring and evaluation into practical, integral tools for social change, to name just a few. But there was one thing she was sure of – that digital technology and communications had a bigger role to play when it came to creating and measuring impact.

Two years on, business is flourishing with collaborations, collective impact initiatives, and government and non-government health and social service organisations all seeking to better understand their impact through the unique mix of evaluation, technology and communication skills Jen cultivated into the Navigating Outcomes business model. More significantly, Navigating Outcomes now stands as proof-of-concept for the transformative potential that digital technology and communications offer the social impact measurement space. And with multiple pilots, partnerships and digital outcomes measurement dashboards now under their belt, it’s time for Jen and Navigating Outcomes to take their own advice and look for ways to scale these new tools and methodologies.

Jess Dart, Founding Director of one of Australia’s most renowned evaluation consultancies, was among the first to recognise the potential of the Navigating Outcomes model and approach. A monitoring and evaluation innovator whose methodologies are now commonly employed, Jess had been on the lookout for ways to leverage the benefits of digital technology within her own organisation, Clear Horizon, and the sector more broadly. The challenge was being able to dedicate a team of specialists to such a mandate given the organisation’s large and extremely diverse client base and competing demands. That’s why after having the opportunity to work together on a ground-breaking government project, Jess jumped at the opportunity to permanently welcome Jen and Navigating Outcomes to the Clear Horizon family.
